If you use Claude on the web or the Claude Desktop app, Skills are the upgrade you didn't know you needed. This is the field guide I wish I'd had on day one — what they are, the prebuilt ones to switch on right now, how to browse the official directory, how to upload your own, and the partner skills built for the apps you already use (Notion, Figma, Atlassian, and more).

A Skill = a folder + a
SKILL.mdfile. Claude reads the name and one-line description at session start, then loads the full instructions only when your request actually matches. You don't have to "summon" them — they fire automatically when relevant. Available on Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans.
Skills are modular instruction packs that teach Claude how to do something well, repeatably, in your style. Each one is a self-contained folder containing a SKILL.md file with a name, a description, and step-by-step instructions. Optionally, a skill can ship templates, examples, brand assets, or scripts Claude can run.
The mental model that clicks for most people:

You use them all together. Where connectors are about plumbing, Skills are about taste, process, and repeatability.
Claude sees only the name + one-line description of every installed skill at the start of a chat. That's roughly ~100 tokens per skill. The full SKILL file (typically under 5K tokens) only loads when Claude decides the skill is relevant. Bundled templates and resources load only as needed.
The result: you can install dozens of skills without slowing Claude down or cluttering its attention. It only "remembers" the skill when it matters.
📌 Author tip: When you write your own skill, treat the description like a search query Claude will run against itself. Vague description = skill never fires. Specific description = Claude triggers it the moment it's useful.
You can be productive in 60 seconds with Path 1. Paths 2–4 unlock progressively more power.
